The WordPress alternative
that does the work for you.

WordPress hands you the tools. Building, filling, securing and maintaining it is on you — or you hire it in, piece by piece. Growthdesk does the work from the Netherlands, for one flat monthly rate.

Every WordPress alternative, sorted by who does the work.

Almost every list of alternatives compares tools: drag-and-drop, templates, monthly prices. Except the tool is rarely the problem. What counts is who builds the site, fills it, gets it found and keeps it up. That is the axis every serious option is placed on below, ours included.

You do the work

Tools. You get a kit and the keys. Whatever happens next, you do.

WordPress

For anyone who wants to get under the hood and either has a developer or is one. Nothing comes off your plate: hosting, updates, plugins, security, SEO and content are all your job.

Wix

For anyone who wants something online fast without thinking about tech. You are your own builder, copywriter and SEO specialist though: what you do not do, does not happen.

Squarespace

For anyone who mainly wants it to look good and can work with a tidy template. Good-looking is not the same as getting found, so content and SEO stay your job.

Shopify

For a real webshop: stock, shipping, hundreds of products. For an ordinary business site it is too much machine, with a subscription to match.

AI builds the first version

A flying start, not a finish line. The first version lands in an afternoon.

Lovable, v0, Bolt

For a prototype or a one-off idea that has to be online today. What you get back is code: hosting, updates and security are yours from then on.

Durable, Framer AI

For a simple site you would rather not host yourself. The AI writes your copy too, and it reads generic: it is not about what your customer is looking for.

You plus a builder

The work goes to a specialist, but only when you call them in.

Webflow

For a designer who wants to decide exactly how it looks. Without one it gets technical fast, and after launch the site sits still until someone has time again.

Headless plus a developer

For a large or unusual site with real custom requirements. Fast and flexible, but you need a developer permanently. Even for a comma.

Someone else does the work

Building, filling, getting found and upkeep all sit outside your own calendar.

A marketing or web agency

For anyone who genuinely wants it off their plate and has the budget. It is a project of weeks though, an hourly invoice, and every change goes through a request.

Growthdesk

For anyone who wants it off their plate without agency prices, and wants to sell a little more every month. The site does run on our platform, so you do not manage the code yourself. If that is exactly what you want, WordPress makes more sense.

What a “free” WordPress site actually costs.

The software is free. After that it starts. These are the line items that get added one by one — and that you either pay for or do yourself.

  • Hosting & domain monthly

A server to run your site on. Count on €5 to €25 a month, plus your domain name.

  • Theme & page builder yearly

A premium theme and a page builder like Elementor Pro: a yearly subscription that keeps renewing, easily €60 to €150 a year together.

  • Plugins per plugin

SEO (Yoast), security, backups, forms, speed. The good versions are paid — each one separately.

  • Someone to build it one-off

Unless you do it yourself: a freelancer or agency easily charges €1,500 to €5,000 for a proper site.

  • Maintenance, updates & security ongoing

Plugins and the system itself fall behind, get hacked, or break after an update. That stays your responsibility.

  • SEO, content & ads separate

A plugin does not do your SEO. For that you hire separate specialists, or do it on the side yourself.

Add it up: easily hundreds of euros a year in licences and hosting, a one-off build fee, plus the hours you put in.

With Growthdesk

One flat monthly rate. First month free, then from €19 a month. Hosting, security, updates, SEO and content: included — and we do the work.

When WordPress is the better choice.

WordPress is not bad — it is just something else. Choose WordPress if you want to get under the hood yourself, have a developer in house, or are building something very specific: a large webshop, a member portal, a custom application. Then the freedom of WordPress is exactly what you need.

Growthdesk is the Dutch alternative for entrepreneurs who do not want to manage a website, but want one that works, gets found, and sells a little better every month — without tinkering with it themselves.

QUESTIONS

About WordPress and Growthdesk.

What is the best alternative to WordPress?

There is no single best alternative, only the one that matches how much you want to do yourself. The WordPress alternatives you can choose from differ mostly on that point. If you want to build it yourself, Wix and Squarespace are the logical choice. If you have a designer or developer, Webflow or a headless site. If you want the work off your plate, you end up at an agency or at Growthdesk.

What is better than WordPress?

For most business owners, any alternative that leaves no maintenance with you is better. WordPress is powerful, but updates, plugins and security stay your responsibility. If you want convenience, a hosted platform is better. If you want maximum freedom over the code, little beats WordPress.

What are the equivalents of WordPress?

The direct equivalents are the hosted site builders: Wix, Squarespace and Shopify. Alongside those, Webflow and headless builds (Next.js, Astro) for anyone with a designer or developer, AI builders like Lovable and v0 for a fast first version, and agencies or Growthdesk for anyone who does not want to do the work themselves.

What is the best free website builder?

In practice, free does not exist. WordPress.org, Wix and Squarespace all have a free or cheap start, but you still pay for hosting, your own domain name, and the plugins or subscription you need. With any free package, count your own hours as the biggest cost. With Growthdesk the first month is free and after that you pay from €19 a month, everything included.

Is WordPress really free?

The software (WordPress.org) is free. A working website is not: you pay for hosting, usually a premium theme and plugins, and often someone to build and maintain it. “Free” refers to the system, not to the site.

I currently build with Elementor. Is Growthdesk an alternative?

Elementor is a page builder inside WordPress: you drag your pages together yourself, renew the Pro licence every year and keep updates and plugins going on your own. All that extra code also tends to slow your site down. Growthdesk does that work for you: you send a message, we build, speed up and maintain. If you like tinkering yourself, Elementor fits better. If you want it off your plate, we are the alternative.

Can I move my existing WordPress site to Growthdesk?

Yes. We rebuild your site on our platform, using your current content and brand style as the basis, and then take it live on your own domain. You do not have to migrate anything yourself.

Will I be locked into Growthdesk?

Your domain and your content are yours, and you can cancel monthly — no annual contract. The site itself runs on our platform, which is exactly what takes the maintenance off your plate. If you specifically want full control over the code, WordPress fits better — we will say so honestly.

Do I still need a hosting provider or a developer?

No. Hosting, maintenance, security and updates are part of it. You no longer need a separate hosting bill, a developer, or plugin subscriptions.

Is Growthdesk suitable for a webshop?

For a real webshop with hundreds of products, no — WordPress (WooCommerce) or Shopify makes more sense there. You can put single payments or donations on your site with the payment module. Not sure? Just ask us.

How fast does my site go live?

A first version is often live within days, not weeks. After that you adjust it with a message: we handle it and take it live.
